Mock tobacco auction is Friday at 2 p.m. at State Fair

Troxler, Hagan will speak at event

 

WHO/WHAT:

Retired auctioneers, buyers and warehousemen will demonstrate the way tobacco used to be sold in North Carolina. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and Sen. Kay Hagan will make brief remarks.

WHEN:

Friday, Oct. 23, 2 p.m.

WHERE:

Exposition Center, State Fairgrounds. (The auction will take place at the livestock show ring in the back of the building, behind the horticultural and animal exhibits.)

OTHER INFO:

For more than 150 years, North Carolina farmers sold tobacco at auctions. Today, auctions have been replaced by direct contracts with tobacco companies.

Duke Homestead is coordinating the event.
