N.C. State Fair plans to recognize seniors, military;
hosting several special events

RALEIGH - Contrary to popular belief, all the action is not confined to the weekends at the N.C. State Fair, with four special events planned on weekdays this year. Senior citizens and members of the military and their families will be honored on special days, plus the Fair is partnering with local Subway restaurants and Food Lion grocery stores to host special events.

While seniors ages 65 and over get in free every day of the Fair, on Tuesday, Oct. 16, they can also enjoy a free breakfast and entertainment at the Senior Citizen Fun Festival. The event, which is sponsored by Bojangles’, will take place in Dorton Arena at 9 a.m. Entertainment will be provided by Leon Jacobs and Dale Jones.

Tuesday is also Twisted Tuesday at the Fair, hosted by Jared Fogle, the Subway Guy. Fogle will be on hand to announce the winner of Subway restaurants’ Seriously Twisted Sub competition. Five subs will be judged at 2 p.m. in the Sam Rand Grandstand in conjunction with the Keith King Bicycle Stunt Show to determine which is most “twisted.” Prizes include a year’s worth of free subs and tickets to the NASCAR Subway Fresh 500 race.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, is Military Appreciation Day at the Fair, offering free admission to active duty, reserve and National Guard service members or spouses and four guests with valid military ID. This is the second year the Fair has paid tribute to members of the U.S. military for their service to the country. Military bands will perform throughout the day on the Waterfall Stage.

Thursday, Oct. 18, is Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the Fair when anyone can gain free admission by bringing four canned food products to the Fair. This popular annual event, benefiting the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, is one of the largest canned-food drives in the state and has collected more than 12 million pounds of food in its 12-year history.

The State Fair runs Oct. 12-21 in Raleigh. For more information about activities and events planned, go to www.ncstatefair.org.
