RALEIGH - William Dawson of Raleigh won the first-ever Seriously Twisted Sub contest at the N.C. State Fair on Tuesday.
A panel of judges chose Dawson's "Blackbeard's Spicy Sweet Seven Seas" as the winner from among five finalists they taste-tested at the fair. The finalists were selected from among nearly 3,800 entries in the online contest, sponsored by the State Fair and Subway.
Jared Fogle, the Subway Guy, presented Dawson with his prizes: a year's worth of Subway sandwiches and tickets to the Subway 500 in Martinsville, Va.
Dawson's entry featured pepperjack cheese, tuna, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, red onions, hot peppers, banana peppers, honey mustard, pepper and Miss Vickie’s Jalapeno Flavored Potato Chips on fresh-baked honey oat bread.
Other finalists:
Light Apple Twist, created by Terrie McElwain of Cary. It consisted of white American cheese, turkey, lettuce, red onions, light mayonnaise, honey mustard, apples and raisins on fresh-baked honey oat bread.
The Pork Princess, submitted by Mo Will of Beaufort. The sub used pepperjack cheese, ham, bacon, Genoa salami, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, peppers, olives, onions, red onions, green bell peppers, carrots, banana peppers, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper on fresh-baked wheat bread.
Spicy Hot Herbivore Heaven, created by Dilcy Burton of Durham. It was made from white American cheese, Monterey cheddar, provolone, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, peppers, olives, red onions, hot peppers, banana peppers, honey mustard, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper and Original Sun Chips on fresh-baked wheat bread.
Redneck Rebellion, submitted by Leighann Lawson of High Point. Her sub combined white American cheese, Monterey cheddar, provolone, pepperjack cheese, turkey, ham, bacon, Genoa salami, pepperoni, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, peppers, onions, green bell peppers, hot peppers, mayonnaise, mustard, ranch dressing, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, Nacho Cheese Doritos and Cooler Ranch Doritos on fresh-baked wheat bread.
